This patriarch of a large herd of elk found in Park City, Utah is showing his age. This was shot in early December and he was much thinner than the younger members of the herd which makes you wonder if this might be his last winter. I loved his wise expression! Some cultures revere the elk as a spiritual force.
The elk or wapiti is one of the largest species of the Cervidae or deer family in the world, and one of the largest land mammals in North America and eastern Asia. It was long believed to be a subspecies of the European red deer, but evidence from a 2004 study of the mitochondrial DNA indicates that the two are distinct species.
