The Croatan National Forest is one of four National Forests in North Carolina and the only true coastal forest in the East. The Croatan National Forest's 160,000 acres have pine forests, saltwater estuaries, bogs and raised swamps called pocosins. Bordered on three sides by tidal rivers and the Bogue Sound, the forest is defined by water. The forest was named Croatan after the Indian tribe living in the region at the time of the so-called Lost Colony (1587).
This image shows a stand of longleaf pine with the trees showing evidence of fire. The forest is managed with controlled burns. The goal of the burn is to reduce the amount of fuel on the forest floor to prevent future catastrophic wildfires. The burn will also improve habitat for fire adapted species such as the endangered red cockaded woodpecker and will help restore the longleaf pine ecosystem.
